Sony's $9,000 Airpeak drone: dead before DJI noticed

Sony announced the Airpeak S1 in January 2021 and shipped it that June — billed as the world's smallest drone able to carry a full-frame mirrorless camera, aimed at film crews who wanted Sony's α quality in the air. The kit cost around $9,000 for the drone alone, before lenses.

Sony had the imaging pedigree but not the ecosystem: DJI dominated with cheaper, more capable platforms, and the S1's premium price and closed accessories bought none of the market it needed. On 1 November 2024 Sony announced the line would stop selling on 31 March 2025, citing 'changes in the business environment'.

The wind-down was gradual: accessory batteries and propellers stayed on sale until March 2026, with software support promised through March 2030. PetaPixel called the S1 'utter flop' territory — a camera giant's drone that never got off the ground commercially.

Sales of the Airpeak S1 and its gimbals and chargers ended on 31 March 2025; batteries and propellers continued until March 2026 and software and repairs until 2030. Sony's drone division was not replaced — the company's professional imaging line went back to cameras, leaving DJI's dominance unchallenged. The S1 joined the short list of camera-brand drone failures alongside GoPro's Karma.
