Sonic's ¥500M children's formalwear ecommerce business collapsed when weddings stopped

An online children's formalwear store was destroyed when COVID cancelled weddings, ceremonies, and recitals that drove its sales.

Sonic Co., Ltd. · 2022-03-11

What happened

Sonic Co., Ltd. was a Kagawa-based ecommerce company operating the online store 'Little Princess', specializing in children's formalwear — dresses, suits, and formal bags sold through shopping mall platforms. Based in Takamatsu, Kagawa, the company targeted parents who needed formal attire for children attending weddings, recitals, and ceremonial events.

When COVID-19 caused the cancellation or postponement of weddings, school ceremonies, and recitals across Japan, demand for children's formalwear effectively vanished. As a pure ecommerce business with no physical store traffic to fall back on, Sonic had no alternative revenue stream when its single customer segment disappeared.

Sonic filed for self-bankruptcy in January 2022 and was ordered into bankruptcy proceedings by the Takamatsu District Court on March 11, 2022, with approximately ¥500 million in liabilities.

Why it happened

  • A single-category ecommerce store selling children's formalwear had no diversification — when weddings and ceremonies stopped, 100% of revenue disappeared at once.
  • Unlike a general apparel retailer that could pivot to casual wear, Sonic's entire product line was formal attire for events that no longer happened.
  • As an ecommerce-only business operating through shopping mall platforms, Sonic had no brand recognition or direct customer relationships to pivot to a different product category.
  • With ¥500 million in debt and no apparent revenue stream after the event cancellations, there was no path to recovery without a complete business transformation.

The lesson

A single-category ecommerce business has no resilience beyond the events that drive its demand — when those events stop, there is no storefront and no other category to sell.

Aftermath

Sonic Co., Ltd. was ordered into bankruptcy proceedings by the Takamatsu District Court on March 11, 2022, with approximately ¥500 million in liabilities. The company operated the 'Little Princess' online store selling children's formalwear through shopping mall platforms. Attorney Toru Oba was appointed as bankruptcy trustee.
