SKYMART grew from an online shop to 5 Hong Kong stores — then closed them all in one day
HK fashion brand SKYMART spent a decade building a 5-store chain, then shut every physical store on March 14, 2025, citing HK's deteriorating retail climate.

What happened
SKYMART was a Hong Kong fashion brand popular with young women. It began as an online store, expanded to an upstairs shop (樓上舖), and eventually grew to five physical stores in major malls including Sha Tin New Town Plaza, Kwai Fong Metroplaza, Yuen Long YOHO Mall, Kwun Tong APM, and Mongkok TOP. For nearly a decade, it was a homegrown retail success story — a local brand that made the leap from ecommerce to multi-location brick-and-mortar retail.
The reversal was sudden. On March 14, 2025, SKYMART announced on Instagram that it was closing all physical stores effective immediately. The brand's statement said the decision was driven by 'the deterioration of Hong Kong's business environment and the extremely high expenses of physical stores.' Customers with pre-ordered items were promised refunds.
The brand is continuing as a pure online store — returning to the model it was built on. But the five physical storefronts, built up over nearly a decade across some of Hong Kong's highest-rent shopping districts, were gone in a single announcement.
Why it happened
- Hong Kong's retail environment deteriorated sharply post-pandemic, with declining foot traffic in shopping malls as residents shifted spending to cross-border shopping in mainland China.
- SKYMART's physical stores were in prime mall locations — APM, New Town Plaza, YOHO Mall — where rents remained high even as consumer spending dropped.
- The brand's core customer base of young women was also the segment most likely to shift to online-first shopping and cross-border ecommerce, making physical stores in HK increasingly redundant.
- The decision to close all stores at once rather than gradually reflects that the retail footprint had become a net liability — the online channel, not physical expansion, was the sustainable model.
The lesson
Expanding from online to physical retail is not always progress. For a brand whose customers are comfortable shopping online, physical stores can become a cost centre rather than a growth driver.
