What happened

Why it happened

• The brand aged with its customers: a general-merchandise store never renewed its image for younger shoppers, and every clearance sale traded on nostalgia rather than a new reason to come.
• The lease renewal became the decision point: with the lease expired, the operator chose closure instead of renegotiating, treating each remaining branch as optional.
• The district's decline was accepted rather than fought: an anchor tenant that once shaped the mall shrank from seven floors to three and then out, with no repositioning play.

Aftermath

The West Kowloon Centre branch closed on 4 January 2026 to a crowd of regulars and a wall of clearances, and the building's long-time anchor tenant became part of the city's 'closure wave' (結業潮) coverage. With the Sheung Wan store reported to leave at the end of 2026, Sincere — one of only two surviving brands from Hong Kong's four great Cantonese department stores — fell to a single shop in Mong Kok, a running symbol of how the old department-store format is contracting across the city.
