Santou (サントウ), Toyama sewing workshop, bankrupt in 2026

Santou sewed garments in Uozu since 1975 — cheap imports cut orders, costs rose, and unpaid rent pushed it into a 2026 bankruptcy.

Santou (有限会社サントウ) · 2026-05-13

What happened

Santou was a sewing and processing workshop in Uozu City, Toyama Prefecture, founded in 1975, doing contract garment sewing for the clothing industry.

The imports arrived, and the orders left. Inflow of cheap overseas products cut orders, and recently rising costs of every kind squeezed profitability — then unpaid rent tightened cash flow until continuation was judged impossible.

The Toyama District Court's Uozu branch issued a bankruptcy commencement order on 13 May 2026, with liabilities of about ¥120 million.

Why it happened

  • A 51-year sewing shop against imports: contract sewing in Japan competes on price with factories abroad, and Santou had no brand or product of its own to fall back on.
  • Costs rose while revenue fell: materials, energy and the rest climbed just as orders shrank, squeezing the gap between income and outgo.
  • Rent arrears made it visible: the workshop carried on until unpaid rent showed the cash flow was already gone — the stop came late, not early.

The lesson

Sewing shops cannot outlast their orders: Santou's work moved to cheaper factories, costs rose, and rent arrears showed the cash was gone — the Toyama court closed it in May 2026.
