Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy - Definitive Edition, a remaster bundle of GTA III, Vice City and San Andreas, launched on PC on 11 November 2021 with a very short window of access. According to The Verge, the Rockstar Games Launcher went down that same day, which stopped anyone playing the bundle, and any other Rockstar game, on PC.

Rockstar brought the launcher back on 12 November but said the trilogy could not be bought or played because it had to delete files that were 'unintentionally included in these versions'. The Verge reported that data miners had found unlicensed music left disabled in the files and code for a cut minigame, and noted that these might be the files Rockstar removed; Rockstar did not say what they were. The games returned to sale on 15 November, around 72 hours after the delay began, with an apology for the inconvenience.

By then, some buyers had already asked for refunds before the game was playable, and Rockstar was emailing some of them to confirm they really wanted to cancel. The r/grandtheftauto subreddit went dark in protest of the release, citing the pulled PC version and the lack of official statements. Players on all platforms also reported bugs, odd-looking remastered characters and a graphical fault that caused blinding rain.

About 72 hours with the PC version unplayable and unsold, early refunds, a r/grandtheftauto blackout, and bugs and graphics complaints on every platform.

Files that were 'unintentionally included' in the shipped builds forced Rockstar to take the PC game down after launch, in its own words.

The Rockstar Games Launcher failed on launch day, so PC customers could not run the trilogy or any other Rockstar game that day.

Rockstar issued little explanation, which the subreddit blackout cited as a grievance.

The remasters shipped with performance and graphics problems, so buyers were already unhappy before the PC version returned.

Shipping a build with files you did not mean to include means pulling it from paying customers on launch day; test the release build, not just the game.

Rockstar said it was working to improve overall performance and update the game. The Verge said that, with the PC version back on sale, it would now have to deal with growing complaints about performance and graphics, and that it might already be too late for goodwill.
