What happened
In April 2023 American Eagle Outfitters confirmed that Shekar Natarajan, president of its Quiet Platforms logistics unit and AEO chief supply chain officer, had exited effective immediately 'due to the changes within the Quiet Platforms organization'. Unit COO Brent Beabout had also left in March, and Niall Murphy, the unit's chief business officer, took over operations on an interim basis.
The shakeup followed AEO's admission that its logistics unit had grown at a sluggish pace. On the Q4 earnings call, COO Michael Rempell said Quiet Platforms grew nearly 40% but at margins 'below what we expected', and AEO said it would slash expenses within the unit to boost profitability: 'While Quiet's third party business has grown nicely, it has not achieved the plans we envisioned.'
American Eagle had previously credited Quiet Platforms for much of its supply-chain transformation, with executives saying the previous fall that 75% of online orders reached customers within three days. The retailer said it still believed Quiet could become 'a meaningful and profitable third party logistics provider' over time. No financial figures for the unit's losses are given.
What it cost
Logistics-unit expense cuts, the immediate exit of the unit's president and the March departure of its COO; AEO said Quiet 'has not achieved the plans we envisioned'
Why it happened
Growth of 40% sounds strong until it is measured against the margins the parent planned for third-party logistics.
The unit carried its founder-advocate's ambitions; when results lagged, the advocate was the first to go.
Cutting unit expenses to restore profitability trades growth for the margins the earnings call promised.
A logistics network built for one retailer's peaks struggles to price profitable service for outside customers.
The lesson
A logistics arm built for your own stores has to earn outside margins fast, or the parent will cut it back to a cost center.
Aftermath
As of 5 April 2023 Niall Murphy was leading Quiet on an interim basis while AEO cut the unit's expenses, still publicly committed to Quiet becoming a profitable third-party logistics provider. No further results are given.
