Pizza Hut launched Dragontail, an AI delivery management platform, in 2024 with backing from parent Yum! Brands. Chaac Pizza North-east, one of Pizza Hut's largest US franchisees with more than 111 locations across New York, New Jersey, Maryland, Pennsylvania and Washington DC, says it was doing well before the rollout: over 90% of deliveries arrived in under 30 minutes and sales were growing at double-digit rates. On 6 May 2026 it filed a lawsuit in the Texas Business Court, as reported by The Economic Times. All the numbers below are allegations in that suit.

Chaac alleges Dragontail gave DoorDash drivers real-time visibility into the kitchen, including when pizzas came out of the oven. Instead of grabbing an order and leaving, drivers allegedly waited up to 15 minutes to batch several deliveries, so pizzas cooled on the rack and delivery times rose. The suit also alleges drivers could see tip amounts and whether an order was cash, making some less willing to accept certain deliveries. In New York City, Chaac says year-over-year sales growth went from positive 10.19% to negative 9.78%.

Chaac accuses Pizza Hut of breaching its franchise agreement by forcing continued use of the software without enough support or modification, failing to train operators adequately, ignoring requests for help and doing nothing about falling delivery metrics. It seeks more than $100 million in damages. Pizza Hut said it would respond through appropriate legal channels.

Chaac seeks over $100M; it alleges NYC sales growth swung from +10.19% to -9.78% year over year after Dragontail went live.

Dragontail optimised kitchen coordination, but shared oven-timing data with third-party drivers whose incentives differed.

Drivers allegedly responded rationally by waiting to batch orders, which cost speed and food temperature.

Per the suit, franchisees were required to keep using the system without modification or enough support.

Delivery metrics fell for months and, Chaac alleges, Pizza Hut did not act on its requests for help.

An optimiser that exposes kitchen data to third parties changes their behaviour; test the incentives of everyone who sees the new data, not just the kitchen.

As of the 21 May 2026 report, the case was just filed and unresolved; Pizza Hut had given no substantive response beyond saying it would answer through legal channels. The Economic Times also noted Yum! was reviewing strategic options for Pizza Hut and planned to close 250 US locations in the first half of 2026.
