Capitol CMG dropped Newsboys after Michael Tait's confession and the fallout
Capitol CMG terminated Newsboys' contract in June 2025 after lead singer Michael Tait's confession, and K-LOVE pulled the band's catalogue.

What happened
Newsboys were one of Christian music's longest-running bands — founded in 1985, Grammy-nominated, and the group behind the crossover hit 'God's Not Dead'. Capitol Christian Music Group (Capitol CMG), the genre's biggest label, held their contract.
In June 2025, lead singer Michael Tait publicly confessed to years of addiction and to misconduct with two women; a Guardian investigation published days later reported further accounts.
The fallout was fast and total. Capitol CMG terminated the contract, announcing the decision on 22 June at the Elevate Music Festival; K-LOVE, the largest Christian radio network, pulled the band's catalogue; a Canadian promoter cancelled the autumn tour; and dates were cancelled by promoters and venues around the world.
For the label, the bill was the asset itself: a catalogue built over 40 years became unplayable on the radio networks and stages that are the genre's only distribution, and the remaining contract value evaporated. No dollar figure was published.
Why it happened
- The genre sells moral witness, so the frontman's conduct is the inventory: Christian radio, venues and promoters cannot carry a band whose lead singer's confession contradicts the message.
- The label's asset was trust, not just tracks: catalogue sales, radio play and touring all depend on the audience believing the message, so one confession devalued the entire contract at once.
- The drop cascaded through distribution: once the label terminated, K-LOVE and the promoters followed within days, each needing its own distance from the story — self-protection, not coordination.
The lesson
In a genre that sells moral witness, the frontman's credibility is inventory: one confession made a 40-year catalogue unplayable in days. Betting on a person sells that credibility — overnight.
