A court injunction froze NewJeans — and their advertisers moved on within weeks

When a Seoul court barred NewJeans from working without their label, their campaigns froze; one by one, Shinhan, Coca-Cola, Apple and Pepero replaced them.

What happened

NewJeans was one of K-pop's most bankable advertising faces: Shinhan Bank, Coca-Cola, Apple's iPhone campaigns, Lotte Wellfood's Pepero, PUBG Battlegrounds, Hyundai Duty Free, and an honorary ambassadorship for the Korea Tourism Organization. In late 2024 the five members declared their contracts with their label ADOR terminated; ADOR disagreed, and the dispute went to court.

In March 2025 a Seoul court upheld ADOR's injunction: the members could not pursue independent activities or sign commercial deals without the label. The group's activities effectively stopped on 24 March. Then the advertising system quietly rewrote itself around them: on 14 April, Coca-Cola launched a new domestic 'Coke Time' campaign starring NMIXX's Haewon, insisting NewJeans 'remain global ambassadors' while the domestic face changed. Apple's iPhone promotions moved to aespa, Pepero to Stray Kids, the tourism ambassadorship to IU, and Shinhan Bank replaced the group too.

No brand announced a termination; each simply moved. That was the point: when a face becomes legally unusable, advertisers do not fight the injunction — they route around it. The group that had been the industry's golden card in 2024 was written out of campaign after campaign by mid-2025, one replacement at a time.

Why it happened

  • An endorsement is a bet on availability: the injunction made the group unavailable, so the deals lost value regardless of who was right in the dispute
  • Brands moved without announcements because announcing a termination would have taken sides in the dispute; a quiet replacement carried no position
  • Coca-Cola's 'still our global ambassador' line was the playbook: keep the title, change the face — a costless way to look loyal while buying reach elsewhere

The lesson

Endorsements are a bet on availability, not innocence. When a court made NewJeans unavailable, their advertisers routed around them — no terminations, just replacements.

Aftermath

The dispute with ADOR continued and the injunction kept the group commercially unusable through 2025. Korean media counted Shinhan Bank, Coca-Cola's domestic campaigns, Apple, Pepero and the tourism ambassadorship among the work that moved to other faces. The episode became Korea's reference case for how fast the advertising system rewrites itself around a frozen act.
