Nakanishi Tokeiten: a 1935 watch shop in Toyama sank under ¥1B in debt

Nakanishi Tokeiten, a Nanto City watch and jewellery shop trading since 1935, was ordered into bankruptcy in May 2024 with about ¥1 billion in liabilities.

What happened

Nakanishi Tokeiten was a long-running watch, precious metal and eyewear retailer in Nanto City, Toyama Prefecture, trading since 1935 and incorporated in 1971. At its peak it ran two stores.

For decades the shop lived on local walk-in customers buying watches, gold and spectacles. The trade began to shrink as more business moved to online mail order and younger customers stopped coming to high-street watch shops.

Sales never recovered and cash flow tightened. The company could not pay its creditors, and the Takaoka branch of the Toyama District Court issued a bankruptcy commencement order on 28 May 2024, with debts of roughly ¥1 billion.

Why it happened

  • Brick-and-mortar watch and jewellery retail was hollowed out by online mail-order competition, and the shop had no digital channel of its own to meet it.
  • The decline was slow but unbroken, and the company kept running without a recovery plan as sales fell and cash flow tightened.
  • A ¥1 billion debt load, built up over the decades, left no room to restructure once the losses took hold.

The lesson

A family shop that had outlived generations watched its walk-in trade move online and never recovered. With debt near ¥1 billion, it could not cut costs or find new cash quickly enough to survive.

Aftermath

The Takaoka branch of the Toyama District Court issued a bankruptcy commencement order against Nakanishi Tokeiten on 28 May 2024, with liabilities of about ¥1 billion. The two shops that had served Nanto City since 1935 closed, and a family business that had outlived several generations ended as a casualty of the shift to online retail.
