A tabloid affair report cost Nagano Mei all 9 of her CM contracts in 9 days

An affair report in Shukan Bunshun emptied actress Nagano Mei's ad portfolio: all 9 brands, from JCB to SK-II, pulled her materials within 9 days.

What happened

Nagano Mei was one of Japan's most in-demand commercial faces of the mid-2020s — a lead actress carrying nine simultaneous brand campaigns at the start of 2025: JCB credit cards, Sunstar's Ora2 toothpaste, Suntory, MOS Burger, NTT Communications, Kracie's Ichikami hair care, SK-II and others.

On April 23, 2025, Shukan Bunshun's digital edition reported an alleged affair; both talent agencies denied it. On May 7 the magazine published alleged LINE message exchanges. None of it was a court finding or an official statement — but the brands did not wait for one: JCB and Sunstar removed her CM videos and banners on May 8, Suntory and MOS Burger by May 13, Kracie on May 15, and SK-II by May 17.

Kracie said it had decided it was 'difficult to conduct communication activities conveying the brand value of Ichikami under the current circumstances.' Advertising sources told Sports Hochi the CM contracts themselves continued — the removals were 'a comprehensive judgment, taking into account opinions from consumers.' By May 17 every one of the nine companies had withdrawn her videos and images.

Why it happened

  • A tabloid allegation, denied by both agencies, was enough: no brand waited for a court or a police finding — the first two pulled on May 8, nine days after the report.
  • The removals were protective, not contractual: sources said the contracts continued, but consumer sentiment made the materials unshowable — reputation risk was priced before any fact was established.
  • Each removal made the next easier: JCB and Sunstar went first, Suntory and MOS Burger followed within days, and by May 17 the remaining brands had nothing left to wait for.
  • A denial did not stop the cascade: an agency statement did not outpace a tabloid headline in the decision loop of an advertiser.

The lesson

No brand waited for a verdict: a denied tabloid allegation emptied nine CM contracts in nine days. Suspicion is priced the moment the headline lands; the agency's denial arrived too late to matter.

Aftermath

By May 17, 2025, all nine of Nagano Mei's campaigns had withdrawn her CM videos and images, though advertising sources said the contracts themselves continued. JCB and Sunstar removed her materials on May 8, Suntory and MOS Burger by May 13, Kracie on May 15 — citing the difficulty of conveying Ichikami's brand value 'under the current circumstances' — and SK-II by May 17. Both talent agencies denied the reported affair and LINE exchanges. The episode became the reference case for how quickly a tabloid report can empty an actress's commercial portfolio.
