Exhibitor withdrawals killed Mobile World Congress 2020 two weeks out
Amazon, Sony, Ericsson and nine more giants pulled out of Barcelona over coronavirus; on 12 February 2020 the GSMA cancelled the show for 100,000 attendees.

What happened
Mobile World Congress, organised by the GSMA, was set for 24–27 February 2020 in Barcelona. More than 100,000 people usually attend, including around 6,000 travellers from China, where the coronavirus outbreak had begun.
From early February the exhibitor list unwound: LG, Sony, Ericsson, Nokia, Nvidia, Intel and Amazon withdrew, followed by BT, Deutsche Telekom, Facebook, Orange and Vodafone; Huawei cut its delegation to European-based staff. With the floor emptying a fortnight before doors, GSMA chief John Hoffman cancelled the show on 12 February 2020, citing 'global concern regarding the coronavirus outbreak, travel concern and other circumstances'.
The hit fell hardest on small exhibitors that had spent disproportionate budgets on Barcelona, and on the city itself, which the show normally lifts hugely. Reporting noted the GSMA's insurance might not pay for a voluntary cancellation made without a formal health-emergency mandate. MWC 2020 became an early marker of the year of cancelled events.
Why it happened
- The show's value was its crowd: once anchor exhibitors left, remaining booths could not justify the travel risk, and withdrawals compounded.
- There was no middle option: a half-empty show was worse than none, and the GSMA had no mandate or precedent for a partial event.
- The decision lagged the risk: exhibitors committed and withdrew inside two weeks, leaving the organiser to cancel a fortnight before doors.
The lesson
A trade show is a coordination game: once anchor exhibitors withdrew, MWC 2020 lost the only thing it really sold — the certainty that everyone would be there.
Aftermath
MWC returned to Barcelona in later years; the 2020 cancellation is remembered as the moment the pandemic reached the global events calendar.
