Yoshitsune won every battle of the Genpei War — then his own brother hunted him down

The founder who outperforms the board, the deputy who outshines the chief, the star who outsells the house: performance without a political settlement is a liability. Agree what the victory buys before you win it.
What happened
In 1184–1185 Minamoto no Yoshitsune won the Genpei War: Ichi-no-tani, Yashima, and the sea battle of Dan-no-ura, where the Taira were destroyed and the child emperor drowned. No general in the war had a record like his — and none would pay for it faster.
His brother Minamoto no Yoritomo, head of the house and master of the eastern warriors, had stayed in Kamakura while the war was won. When Yoshitsune accepted court titles from the capital without his brother's leave, Yoritomo turned him away at the gates of Kamakura. The man who had finished the war could not come home to his own side.
Yoshitsune fled the capital, hunted by the regime his victories had built. He found shelter with Fujiwara no Hidehira in distant Hiraizumi; when Hidehira died, his heir Yasuhira chose Yoritomo's favour over his father's oath. In 1189 troops closed on Yoshitsune at Koromogawa and he died there. Yoritomo then marched north and destroyed the Fujiwara of Hiraizumi for the crime of having sheltered him.
Why it happened
- Yoshitsune treated the war as purely military and ignored that its prizes were political: he won the battles but never secured a place in the order his victories created.
- Accepting court titles without Yoritomo's permission read as choosing the capital over Kamakura — independence from the only patron who paid his troops.
- A victorious general is the most dangerous man in a regime one family is building; Yoritomo's calculation was rational, which is what made it unstoppable.
- The northern Fujiwara sheltered a man their new overlord wanted dead, and learned that sanctuary is a position that must be defended or surrendered.
The lesson
Battlefield victory is not a position; it is a debt owed by whoever pays the army. The hero who wins without settling with his patrons becomes the threat they must remove.
