Mimimi made acclaimed stealth tactics games, but the genre couldn't sustain the studio
Mimimi made critically acclaimed stealth tactics games like Shadow Tactics and Desperados III, but the niche genre never generated enough revenue.
Mimimi Games
What happened
Mimimi Games was a German video game studio founded in Munich on 13 January 2011 by Dominik Abé and Johannes Roth. The pair had been collaborating since 2008 and released early games like Grounded (2009) and daWindci (2011, iOS). Their first commercially significant title was The Last Tinker: City of Colors in 2014, but the studio found its identity with Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun in 2016 — a real-time stealth tactics game set in Edo-period Japan that was critically acclaimed and built a loyal following.
Mimimi followed with Desperados III (2020), a western-themed stealth tactics game that also earned strong reviews. In 2021 they released Aiko's Choice, a standalone expansion for Shadow Tactics. The studio had found its niche: highly polished, meticulously designed real-time tactics games with a strong narrative and visual identity. By 2021 the team had grown to 38 employees.
On 29 August 2023, just two weeks after launching Shadow Gambit: The Cursed Crew — a pirate-themed stealth tactics game and their third major title in the genre — Mimimi announced it would close. The founders stated that rising development costs and insufficient revenue had made it impossible to continue. The studio formally shut down in December 2023. Despite making some of the highest-rated games in the stealth tactics genre, the audience for those games was not large enough to sustain the studio through multi-year development cycles.
Why it happened
- Mimimi built its entire business around a niche genre — real-time stealth tactics — that had a small, loyal audience but never generated mainstream sales volume
- Each game required years of development with increasing production values and costs, but the revenue per title remained insufficient to fund the next project
- The studio chose to deepen its expertise in one genre rather than diversify into more commercially accessible game types, creating a structural dependency on a limited market
The lesson
Critical acclaim does not pay the bills. Mimimi made some of the best stealth tactics games, but the audience was too small to sustain a studio through multi-year development.
Aftermath
Mimimi Games closed in December 2023. Its three founders and 38 employees lost their jobs. The studio's games remain available on digital storefronts. Shadow Gambit: The Cursed Crew was the final title. The closure was seen as a significant loss for the real-time tactics genre, which has historically struggled to support dedicated studios despite a passionate fan base.
