Marui City Yokohama closes Feb 2026 after 30 years, sales halved

Marui Group's Yokohama store peaked then halved as shopping moved online — the lease ends and the 30-year store closes Feb 2026.

What happened

Marui Group announced on 17 November 2025 that Marui City Yokohama, its fashion building at Yokohama Station's east exit, would close on 28 February 2026. The store opened in September 1996 and had run for about 30 years.

The company cited intensifying competition from online shopping and the expiry of the building lease. Sales had fallen to about half their peak, and the store occupied the second basement to the eighth floor of the Sky Building in Takashima, Nishi-ku.

The closure leaves the Sky Building without Marui as its anchor. Marui Group did not announce plans for the site at the same time, and its other Marui City and 0101 stores continue to operate.

Why it happened

  • Half the peak and a lease renewal: sales halved under e-commerce competition, so when the Sky Building lease came up, renewal meant betting on a declining business.
  • Online took the fashion customer: the rise of online shopping is the competitive force the company cites behind the sales decline.
  • An anchor store that aged with its customer base: opened in 1996, the store ended its 30-year run with no renovation plan attached to the announcement.

The lesson

A store on a lease is a rolling bet: Marui City Yokohama's sales halved as e-commerce grew, and when the contract ended Marui chose to walk away rather than renew into a weaker business.

Aftermath

Marui Group announced on 17 November 2025 that Marui City Yokohama would close on 28 February 2026, about 30 years after it opened in September 1996. The company cited intensifying competition from online shopping and the expiry of the building lease, with sales down to about half their peak. The store occupies the second basement to the eighth floor of the Sky Building at Yokohama Station's east exit. A closing sale under the banner 'Thank you! 30 years' began on 5 December 2025. Marui Group is listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange Prime market.
