Influencer 毛光光 returned his 20M+ follower accounts to his MCN and restarted from zero
Cross-dressing beauty influencer 毛光光 let his contract expire and returned accounts with 20M+ total followers to his MCN, then rebuilt from a fresh account.

What happened
毛光光, a male influencer whose comedy relied on playing women, became famous for his 柜姐 (counter-lady) series that began in 2020, building accounts with over ten million Douyin followers and more than 20 million across all platforms, an audience that was nearly 84% female.
When his contract with the MCN ran out, the agency kept pushing him to shoot more 柜姐 commercials to monetise the traffic, while he wanted to move past the character and be freer. On 16 July 2025 he announced on a new account that he had returned every account to the company.
The old accounts lost their momentum immediately: the biggest single day shed more than 300,000 followers and the Douyin account fell below 12 million. He left with only a makeup artist, a two-person studio, and a brand-new account with no audience.
The new account passed 900,000 followers within days on the strength of his name and cameos from fellow influencers, but the 20-million-strong audience he had spent years building now belonged to the MCN.
Why it happened
- He traded his entire accumulated audience for creative freedom, betting that his name alone could rebuild what five years of content had taken to earn.
- The accounts belonged to the MCN, not to him, so when the contract ended he had no claim to the audience and had to start at zero.
- The MCN's insistence on repeating the ad-heavy 柜姐 formula and his refusal to keep doing it made the split a choice between the traffic and the independence.
The lesson
An audience you built on someone else's accounts is not an asset you can walk away with — if leaving means starting from zero, the value of the following belongs to whoever owns the account.
Aftermath
毛光光 launched a new account that passed 900,000 followers within days, helped by videos from influencer friends. The abandoned Douyin account, still owned by the MCN, dropped below 12 million followers and was set to private.
