Man Repeller turned a blog into a brand — a reckoning and a dry bank account ended it
Leandra Medine Cohen's 2010 style blog shut on Oct 22, 2020, four months after a staff reckoning and six weeks after a relaunch.

What happened
Man Repeller began in 2010 as Leandra Medine Cohen's personal style blog and grew into a media brand that defined a decade of fashion blogging — front-row seats, display ad budgets, and the idea of dressing for yourself. On October 22, 2020, Medine Cohen confirmed it was ending operations.
The final year broke it from two directions. In summer 2020 employees publicly criticised her and the brand over racist and classist behaviour; Medine Cohen stepped back, and on September 9 the site relaunched as Repeller with new leadership and promises of change. It kept publishing until October 19, when staff were told on a Zoom call that it was over.
'The company has been self-funded by its operations since its launch ten years ago as a personal blog but due to financial constraints, we are no longer able to sustain the business,' Medine Cohen said. Employees were offered severance; one of the defining voices of fashion blogging went silent.
Why it happened
- The business ran self-funded on display advertising built for the blog era; when that dried up, no subscription or commerce line replaced it.
- The public reckoning over workplace culture broke the founder's relationship with her audience at the exact moment the brand was trying to change.
- A rebrand bought six weeks, not a future: relaunching during a crisis with no money is a PR move, not a business plan.
The lesson
A personal brand built on one voice borrows its equity from the founder's behaviour — when the workplace story goes public, the audience and the revenue run out together.
Aftermath
Medine Cohen continued as a solo creator; the site is gone. The shutdown is still cited as the moment fashion blogging's first generation ended — not quietly, but in public.
