Les Enphants was Taiwan's biggest children's wear brand — it closed 800 stores

Les Enphants went from 1,000 China stores and 800 Taiwan stores to a fraction of that. Its last Taiwan factory shut down in 2024.

What happened

Les Enphants was founded in Taiwan in 1971 and became the island's largest children's clothing and maternity brand. At its peak, the brand operated over 800 stores in Taiwan and more than 1,000 stores in mainland China, built on a reputation for quality children's apparel at accessible prices across two generations of Taiwanese families.

The decline was gradual at first, then accelerated. By 2024, Les Enphants had closed over 800 stores in Taiwan, leaving only about 100. In China, the store count had fallen from over 1,000 to just 139. The company's only self-owned factory in Taiwan ceased production at the end of December 2024, with all future manufacturing outsourced.

The company accumulated losses of NT$676 million (approximately US$21 million) by March 2025, against a capital base of NT$2 billion. Les Enphants moved to sell its Shanghai subsidiary for RMB 370–420 million (about NT$1.5–1.7 billion), a rescue transaction that would inject much-needed cash into the struggling business. The stock (2911) had been under sustained selling pressure as investors priced in the contraction.

Why it happened

  • Taiwan's birth rate has been among the world's lowest for years, shrinking the addressable market for children's clothing in its home market
  • Les Enphants expanded aggressively into China but faced competition from both international brands and local e-commerce players who could offer lower prices on the same categories
  • The physical retail model that built Les Enphants into a household name became a liability as consumers shifted to online shopping, leaving hundreds of stores with declining foot traffic

The lesson

Les Enphants did not make bad clothes. It made the wrong bet: that children's clothing stores would always have customers. When children stopped coming, the stores became a cost it could not carry.
