What happened
Lectric eBikes LLC of Phoenix, Arizona — importer of the China-made bikes — recalled about 45,000 XP 3.0, XP 3.0 Long-Range, XP Step-Thru 3.0 and Step-Thru Long-Range e-bikes, sold online at lectricebikes.com from November 1, 2022 to May 6, 2023 at $1,000-$1,200. The subject: the front and rear mechanical disc brake calipers.
The mechanism, per Lectric's help center: when the brakes are improperly adjusted, the brake cable actuator arm can over-rotate, dislocating parts and causing the calipers to fail. The CPSC hazard line reads that the calipers "can fail resulting in loss of control, posing crash and injury hazards to the rider." Four reports of lost braking power had come in; the two injuries involved cuts, scrapes and a broken bone.
The fix was a free brake kit plus up to $100 toward a shop's installation, with Lectric contacting all purchasers directly and its recall page telling owners: "You must have your affected eBike's brakes replaced before you can continue riding." CPSC published the recall as 23-789 on September 7, 2023.
What it cost
About 45,000 XP 3.0 and Step-Thru 3.0 bikes recalled; free brake kits plus up to $100 installation per bike.
Why it happened
The caliper depends on correct cable adjustment; over-rotation dislocates its parts, so a setup error becomes an on-road total failure.
The bikes were sold direct-to-consumer online, so assembly and adjustment happened in customers' homes rather than at a dealer.
Two of the four failure reports involved injuries, which is what turns a parts notice into a serious CPSC recall.
Lectric contacted all purchasers directly instead of waiting for owners to find the notice, given the crash hazard.
The lesson
On a vehicle, a part that misadjustment can push into total failure is a defect at delivery — the recall follows the rider, not the factory.
Aftermath
As of October 5, 2026, the CPSC's records show this is Lectric's only recall among the agency's 10,027 recall records and 373 product safety warnings; the free-kit program, with the $100 installation credit, remains the remedy. The material reports no further incidents.
