Julien Macdonald dressed Beyoncé and went to Givenchy — his label was liquidated in 2023
The Welsh designer's company entered creditors' voluntary liquidation in July 2023 after COVID revenue losses and the collapse of Debenhams.

What happened
Julien Macdonald, the Welsh fashion designer, built a label known for glamour and knitwear. He designed for Givenchy, dressed Beyoncé and other celebrities, and was a mainstay of London Fashion Week. His company, Julien Macdonald Limited, operated from London.
The business was hit by two shocks it could not absorb. The COVID-19 pandemic eliminated event-driven fashion revenue — red carpets, galas and parties stopped. Then Debenhams, one of the label's key retail partners, collapsed in 2021, removing a major distribution channel. The company's revenue fell sharply.
On 12 July 2023, Julien Macdonald Limited entered creditors' voluntary liquidation. Alan Coleman and Marco Piacquadio of FTS Recovery were appointed joint liquidators. The winding-up was recorded at Companies House under company number 04155123. In February 2026, Macdonald returned to London Fashion Week with a new collection at The Shard.
Why it happened
- The label's revenue depended on occasion-wear — a category that vanished when lockdowns cancelled the events that drove purchases
- Debenhams' collapse removed a wholesale channel the label had not replaced; the business was too small to sustain its own retail network
- A designer label's fixed costs — studio, atelier, sample production — do not shrink when the event calendar empties, so losses accumulated quickly
- The company was a small independent in a market where scale matters; without a backing group, it had no balance sheet to survive a multi-year demand shock
The lesson
A fashion label that sells to one department store and one occasion is two shocks away from liquidation — distribution diversity is not optional.
Aftermath
Macdonald returned to London Fashion Week in February 2026, presenting his autumn/winter collection at The Shard. The label's brand and archive survived the liquidation, but the original company did not.
