IKEA China announced the closure of 7 big-box stores in a single day

IKEA China will stop operating seven big-box stores on February 2, 2026 — Shanghai Baoshan to Harbin — as it swaps expansion for precision.

What happened

On January 7, 2026, IKEA China announced that from February 2 it would stop operating seven big-box stores: Shanghai Baoshan, Guangzhou Panyu, Tianjin Zhongbei, Nantong, Xuzhou, Ningbo and Harbin. The notice went up the same morning; at one store, staff learned of the closure from the company's own announcement. Shanghai loses one of its four IKEA stores — Xuhui, Beicai and Changning remain.

IKEA China framed the retreat as a change of model rather than a contraction: after a full review of its customer touchpoints, the business shifts from scale expansion to what it called precision deep-cultivation — reallocating resources, lifting the return on every square metre, and building an omni-channel system in which big stores, small formats and online reinforce each other. Thirty-four customer touchpoints remain across China.

The closures landed in the middle of a wider foreign-retail retreat on the mainland, and customers treated the news as a farewell: photos in front of the blue walls, guesses about clearance discounts, a child unwilling to leave without a toy. Local shoppers keep access through other city stores and IKEA's online channels — its site, app, WeChat mini-program, and flagship stores on Tmall and JD.

Why it happened

  • The suburban big-box model stopped matching how Chinese customers shop, and IKEA itself conceded the era of scale expansion was over.
  • Resources were redirected to fewer, denser touchpoints: 34 remain, with online channels carrying what the closed stores once sold.
  • Seven cities at once — Shanghai, Guangzhou, Tianjin, Nantong, Xuzhou, Ningbo, Harbin — showed the review spared neither tier nor tenure.

The lesson

When the destination store stops being a destination, even the blue box comes down. IKEA's answer was not more stores but fewer, sharper ones — precision instead of scale.

Aftermath

The seven stores stop operating on February 2, 2026; customers are pointed to remaining city stores and IKEA's online channels. The company says it will keep investing in the stores that stay, under a strategy that pairs the surviving big-box network with a stronger online push — after a closure wave that took seven cities in a single announcement.
