Iglo shrank salmon 250g→220g at the same price — Austria's first shrinkflation ruling
Same pack, same price, 30g less salmon. Printing 220g on the box didn't cure the deception — Austria's first binding shrinkflation verdict.
Iglo · 2025-09-19
What happened
In February 2023 Iglo cut the fill of its Atlantik Lachs frozen salmon from 250g to 220g while keeping the price the same — a hidden price rise of about 14 percent. The new weight was printed on the pack, and the unit price was shown correctly. Iglo said that was enough: raw material costs had risen, and the net weight was visible on the front.
Austria's consumer association VKI, acting on behalf of the Social Affairs Ministry, sued under competition law. On 19 September 2025 the Vienna Higher Regional Court (OLG Wien) confirmed the commercial court's judgment: reducing the fill without telling consumers deceives about price and product nature, a misleading commercial practice. Printing the correct weight did not cure the deception, because it did not convey that a reduction had happened; the unit price compares different products, not a product with its own past. The judgment became binding — Austria's first on shrinkflation.
Iglo restored the fill to 250g — before the OLG decision was announced, it said, because raw material prices had relaxed — and called transparency a priority. VKI lawyer Petra Leupold called the ruling a strong signal against hidden price rises that would affect the whole market. State Secretary Ulrike Königsberger-Ludwig announced plans for legislation requiring clear labelling of quantity changes at the checkout.
Why it happened
- Same price, less inside is a hidden price rise: consumers expect an unchanged product for the same price — silent shrinkage deceives.
- Correct print doesn't cure it: a right weight label and unit price never tell buyers that the pack they remember got smaller.
- The ruling is the precedent: Austria's first binding shrinkflation judgment made hidden quantity reductions unlawful under competition law.
The lesson
Consumers expect the same product for the same price: shrink the pack silently and correct labelling won't save you — Austria's courts ruled hidden shrinkflation misleading.
Aftermath
The judgment of 19 September 2025 was Austria's first binding ruling on shrinkflation. Iglo restored the fill to 250g, citing relaxed raw material prices. State Secretary Ulrike Königsberger-Ludwig announced plans for labelling legislation on quantity changes; VKI had sued on behalf of the Social Affairs Ministry.
