Cube denied the news, expelled its star, backtracked — and lost her anyway
Cube denied HyunA's relationship, expelled her over 'broken trust', watched the stock fall 11% — then she left anyway.

What happened
On 3 August 2018 HyunA — the star Cube Entertainment had built through the 4Minute era — confirmed on Instagram that she was dating E'Dawn, a member of the agency's boy band Pentagon, a relationship Cube had denied. Cube's stock fell 5.24% that day.
On 13 September Cube announced it was expelling both artists for having broken its trust. Its stock fell 6.57% that day (from 2,970 to 2,775 won) and another 4.5% the next; within hours the agency reversed course, saying it was still in talks.
On 15 October the two sides agreed to end HyunA's contract — a decade after she joined the company in 2008 — and in January 2019 she and E'Dawn signed with Psy's agency P Nation.
Why it happened
- The denial was the first misstep: Cube told the press the relationship was not real, HyunA posted the confirmation the same day, and the agency's word was the thing that lost value.
- The expulsion priced trust in days: one announcement wiped 6.57% off the stock, the reversal cost the CEO's credibility, and the artists left anyway — Cube paid for a decision it then had to eat.
- An entertainment agency's balance sheet is its roster: when the market reads 'broken trust' as a management problem, the firm loses value on a personnel call it could have handled privately.
The lesson
Agency value rides on artist trust: Cube denied a relationship, expelled the star, reversed in hours, lost ~11% in two days — then she walked anyway. The denial was the failure, not the dating.
Aftermath
Cube and HyunA agreed on 15 October 2018 to end her contract, and in January 2019 she and E'Dawn signed with Psy's P Nation. Cube's reversal on 13 September — hours after announcing the expulsions — did not stop the stock slide or the eventual departures.
