Huishan listed in Hong Kong in 2013 as China's biggest integrated dairy farmer and was one of the market's steadiest stocks, holding a HK$2.69–3.23 band 17 months. It funded itself on cow-leasing schemes and wealth-management products it called 'innovative financing'. In December 2016 Muddy Waters shorted it, calling it 'a fraud... worth close to Zero', alleging profits faked since 2014 via a lie about self-grown alfalfa, farm capex inflated by RMB893M–1.6B, and a chairman-owned subsidiary quietly moved to a related party. Huishan called the allegations groundless and misrepresentative.

On 24 March 2017 the stock sank a record 85% before trading halted, wiping out about US$4.1 billion on a record 779 million shares. That day it emerged Liaoning's finance office had convened 23 creditor banks and asked for no loan withdrawals and no lawsuits, that chairman Yang Kai's vehicle had pledged 3.43 billion shares — a quarter of the company — to Ping An Bank against HK$2.14 billion of loans, and that executive director Ge Kun, who ran the finances, had gone missing after a leave letter citing work pressure.

By November 2017 Huishan was instructing lawyers to prepare for provisional liquidation: its workout plan showed debts of at least RMB38 billion against Deloitte's forensic estimate of RMB25.9 billion in assets, and Ping An had begun a separate action against Champ Harvest, Yang's BVI vehicle. Trading never resumed; the exchange delisted Huishan in 2019. In 2020 Guangzhou Yuexiu Group paid RMB3 billion to reorganise the surviving dairy business.

85% one-day share crash erased US$4.1B; debts of RMB38B against Deloitte's RMB25.9B asset estimate; delisted in 2019

Reported profits rested on an alfalfa self-sufficiency claim that suppliers and import data could contradict — and the company answered the allegation with denial, not disclosure.

Off-ledger financing — cow leases, wealth-management products, pledged shares — meant even the creditor register was unknown to investors.

The chairman's 73% stake sat pledged to one bank, so a collateral call could detonate the share price without any new operating news.

A provincial no-lawsuit pact among 23 banks bought days rather than solvency, and its leak told the market the cash gap was real.

A short report is a free warning. Denying it without opening the books turns a research dispute into a confidence collapse — and a pledged controlling stake makes a debt problem an equity wipeout.

Yang Kai's family businesses outside the listed group — about RMB1.69 billion of equity — were judicially frozen in June 2017. Deloitte led the forensic accounting and provisional liquidation ground through a multi-jurisdictional fight spanning Cayman, BVI and mainland entities. Huishan was delisted in 2019, and Yuexiu's 2020 rescue reorganised the farms under Liaoning Yuexiu Huishan Holdings. Muddy Waters' December 2016 conclusion — equity 'worth close to Zero' — was effectively confirmed within a year.
