Honda built the Clarity line around hydrogen and an 89-mile EV — and ended it in 2021
Honda bet the Clarity line on hydrogen fuel cells and an electric car with just 89 miles of range; US sales crumbled and the line ended.

What happened
Honda built the Clarity as its clean-car statement, offering three drivetrains in one body: a hydrogen fuel-cell car it wanted to sell retail, a plug-in hybrid, and a battery electric version.
The bet leaned on two things that never arrived. The fuel-cell Clarity needed a refuelling network that stayed tiny, and the Clarity Electric shipped with just 89 miles of range — a number that killed it in a market where range was the battleground.
US sales peaked at about 20,000 units in 2018, then slid every year to just 2,597 in 2021. The Clarity Electric was dropped at the end of 2019, and Honda announced the end of the whole line in June 2021, with production winding down in August 2021.
The line was a bet on future infrastructure and a future range war that Honda lost on both counts — a real, well-engineered car family that its own choices left stranded.
Why it happened
- The fuel-cell Clarity was only ever as useful as the hydrogen network, which never grew, so the flagship found almost no buyers
- The Clarity Electric's 89-mile range was a non-starter next to cheaper EVs with twice the range, so it failed on its own spec
- Honda bet one product line on two thinning bets at once — hydrogen retailing and a short-range EV — and sales sank year after year until the line was cut
The lesson
A product line stands or falls on the ecosystem around it. Honda built a fine car on hydrogen that nobody could refuel and an EV too short-ranged to compete, and the line faded out by 2021.
