What happened

The Hartford Civic Center was a $30 million sports arena that opened in 1975. Its roof was a space frame structure — a lattice of steel tubes designed to span the 91-meter width of the arena without interior columns. The design was innovative, using a lightweight diamond space frame that had never been built at this scale.

On January 18, 1978, at 4:15 AM, the roof collapsed — just hours after 5,000 people had attended a University of Connecticut basketball game. No one was in the building. The entire 91-meter span fell to the arena floor. The building was a total loss.

The investigation found that the space frame had been designed with insufficient strength. The compression members were too slender, and the design did not account for load redistribution when individual members buckled. Once one member failed, the load shifted to adjacent members, which also failed — a cascading collapse. The error was not caught because the design calculations had been simplified and the full analysis was never performed.
