What happened
Hands Shibuya, the flagship store of the Japanese lifestyle and DIY retail chain formerly known as Tokyu Hands, will close in November 2026. The store opened on 9 September 1978 in Udagawacho, behind Shibuya Parco, and operated for 48 years. Spanning approximately 5,494 square meters with around 100,000 items spanning household goods, DIY products, stationery, craft supplies, woodworking and gardening tools, it was one of Shibuya's most distinctive retail destinations.
The closure was driven by the non-renewal of the lease agreement, compounded by an aging building structure that made continued operation economically unviable. The store was known for its unusual skip-floor layout and its 'exciting shopping' experience, offering products not easily found elsewhere. Its unique retail proposition — a meticulously curated maze of lifestyle categories — had built a devoted following among both locals and tourists.
