Lucasfilm fired Gina Carano over her posts; the lawsuit settled four years later

In February 2021, after a week of social media posts that drew backlash — including a post comparing the US political climate to Nazi Germany — Lucasfilm fired Gina Carano, who played Cara Dune in The Mandalorian, the flagship show of Disney+. The studio's statement announced the decision as a fact: 'Gina Carano is not currently employed by Lucasfilm and there are no plans for her to be in the future.'

The statement named the reason without negotiation: 'Nevertheless, her social media posts denigrating people based on their cultural and religious identities are abhorrent and unacceptable.' Her character did not return in later seasons. Three years later, Carano sued Disney and Lucasfilm in federal court seeking reinstatement; the case settled in August 2025, with Lucasfilm saying it looked forward to 'identifying opportunities to work together'.

The studio announced the firing as final, but the aftermath cost four years of litigation, settled in 2025, outlasting the controversy.

The studio's statement priced the whole decision in one clause — 'no plans for her to be in the future' — a fan-favourite character ended without a story because the person had become the liability.

Carano sued Disney and Lucasfilm in federal court in California in February 2024, with financial support from Elon Musk, seeking $75,000 in damages and to be recast in the series. On 7 August 2025 the parties announced a settlement, with terms confidential; Lucasfilm described Carano as 'always well respected by her directors, co-stars, and staff'.
