Forum's three Michelin stars did not travel — its only mainland outpost closed

Hong Kong's three-Michelin-star Cantonese institution closed its only mainland China outpost, a rare fine-dining retreat across the border

Forum Restaurant · 富临饭店 · 2025

What happened

富临饭店 was one of Hong Kong's most celebrated Cantonese restaurants, holding three Michelin stars and a decades-long reputation built on the culinary legacy of founder Yeung Koon-yat, the 'King of Abalone.' The restaurant expanded across the border to mainland China, opening an outpost in a high-end Shanghai location that carried the prestige of the Hong Kong original.

By 2025, the Shanghai branch had closed. The closure of this single, prestigious location reflected the broader pressures on Hong Kong fine-dining brands in mainland China: sky-high rents in luxury venues, changing consumer tastes that favoured younger, trendier dining concepts, and the long-run decline of the 'Hong Kong fine-dining mystique' that had once commanded premium prices on the mainland.

The closure was especially notable because Forum was not a chain — the Shanghai restaurant was its only outpost outside Hong Kong. Losing that single expansion bet meant the brand's entire mainland China strategy had ended in failure, and the restaurant retreated to its home market where its reputation remained intact.

Why it happened

  • The Shanghai branch carried the costs of a luxury venue without the foot traffic that the Hong Kong original enjoyed from a local fine-dining clientele.
  • Hong Kong culinary prestige faded in mainland China as domestic fine-dining brands gained favour with younger, affluent diners.
  • The post-pandemic recovery in Shanghai's luxury dining sector was slower than expected, leaving high-end restaurants with unsustainable occupancy and cost structures.
  • A single-location expansion left no room for error — when the Shanghai outpost underperformed, there was no network to absorb losses or test alternative formats.

The lesson

A single-location cross-border bet carries all the risk of expansion with none of the learning — one miss and the strategy is over.
