Forever 21 sold a girls' shirt reading 'Allergic to Algebra' — and pulled it in days

What happened
In September 2011, Forever 21 sold a girls' T-shirt printed with the slogan 'Allergic to Algebra', part of its line of novelty slogan tees. Parents, teachers and shoppers objected: the message framed failing a school subject as a cute identity, and critics said it reinforced the stereotype that girls cannot do maths. One shopper taped a note to an in-store mannequin wearing the shirt: 'SMART girls are cool. Don't buy this top.'
The complaint spread from Reddit to national media within days. Forever 21's senior marketing manager Linda Chang apologised, saying 'our intent was not to discredit education', and the chain pulled the shirt from its website. The episode landed on every subsequent list of fashion's tone-deaf products.
The shirt was a small item with a big tell: novelty merchandise skips the scrutiny a campaign gets, even though it carries the same four words of brand voice on the customer's chest.
Why it happened
- The slogan joked about failing a school subject and printed it for the demographic most often told it cannot do it — the offence was in the pairing.
- Nobody in the approval chain asked how the phrase reads to a parent buying for a 12-year-old; novelty items pass with no review at all.
- The store was selling identity to teenagers, so a throwaway slogan carried the weight of a position.
The lesson
A slogan tee is a statement about the wearer; a joke at the expense of its own demographic reads as an insult. Give novelty items the same review as campaigns.
Aftermath
Forever 21's slogan-tee line drew similar complaints in later years, and the shirt remains the standard example of how low the bar looks when a brand prints it on a child. The chain filed for bankruptcy in 2019 and again in 2025.
