Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within — the $137M film that sank Square Pictures
Square's film division burned a reported $137M on one sci-fi film; an $85M gross could not pay it back, and Square Pictures shut down.

What happened
Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within was Square's attempt to put its RPG maker's name on the big screen: a fully computer-animated science-fiction film directed by Hironobu Sakaguchi, creator of the Final Fantasy series, whose photorealistic ambitions became the movie's entire marketing story.
The budget grew to a reported $137 million — the most expensive video-game film of its time — but the result was a drama about a scientist hunting a ghost-like alien presence, not the action story game fans expected. It opened in July 2001 and grossed about $85 million worldwide; The Independent reported the film failed to cover its $145 million cost.
Square Pictures was shut down: the company announced the studio's closure in early 2002, with the Honolulu studio closing on March 31. The failure also delayed Square's long-considered merger with Enix, which was only completed in 2003 — Enix hesitated to merge with a company that had just lost a fortune on a movie.
The film is remembered as the moment a game company mistook its brand for a movie franchise, and as the standard example of a vanity project whose marketing never matched its audience.
Why it happened
- Square turned its RPG brand into a $137M photorealistic drama, giving game fans an arthouse plot instead of the action they expected.
- The budget outgrew any plausible audience: a $85M worldwide gross against a $137M budget and $145M total cost.
- The studio doubled down on the film's technology as the selling point, while the story gave audiences nothing to attach to.
The lesson
A brand is not a business plan. Square spent $137M assuming Final Fantasy fans would follow the name to cinemas, and the film's $85M gross showed the audience never asked for it.
Aftermath
Square Pictures closed in March 2002 and Square merged with Enix in 2003, having survived the film's losses. The Spirits Within is still the reference point for video-game films that outspend their audiences — no game-to-film project since has matched its budget-to-gross gap. Hironobu Sakaguchi left Square in 2003 and later founded Mistwalker; the Final Fantasy franchise itself recovered, but Square never made another theatrical film.
