Blue Protocol: Bandai Namco's anime MMO shut down after 19 months

Bandai Namco's flagship anime MMO ran 19 months in Japan (June 2023–Jan 2025) — and its Amazon-published global version was canceled before launch.

What happened

Blue Protocol — Bandai Namco Online's anime-styled online action RPG, announced as the company's flagship answer to Genshin Impact's global success — launched in Japan on June 14, 2023 after years of development. An English version was planned in partnership with Amazon Games.

On August 28, 2024, Bandai Namco announced the Japanese service would end on January 18, 2025 — and that the western release was canceled outright. The game ran 19 months in Japan and never launched anywhere else.

The failure was a market test with no market: the Japanese live-service market had already shown the ceiling for anime MMOs, and Blue Protocol's lukewarm reception made the global bet untenable — the game's own numbers decided the western version's fate before it existed.

Why it happened

  • The genre had a proven ceiling: anime MMOs in Japan had struggled for years, and Blue Protocol's launch reception showed it could not break the pattern.
  • The live-service model punished the slow start: a subscription and gacha hybrid needed an early hit to sustain itself, and Blue Protocol's modest engagement made a 19-month run.
  • The partnership amplified the risk: Amazon's global publishing commitment was tied to the game's performance, and once the Japanese service declined, the western launch was an expensive bet.

The lesson

A live-service game is a market test before it is a product: Blue Protocol's Japanese numbers decided the western launch's fate.
