FACETASM was Japan's first LVMH Prize finalist — it is pausing after 19 years

Founded by Hiromichi Ochiai in 2007, FACETASM runs its last season in spring/summer 2026 and pauses; both stores close by the end of February 2026.

What happened

Hiromichi Ochiai founded FACETASM in 2007, and it became one of Japan's most decorated independent labels: in 2016 it was the first Japanese finalist for the LVMH Prize and won the Grand Prize at the Mainichi Fashion Awards. From 2021 Ochiai also co-developed FamilyMart's original apparel line, Convenience Wear.

On 15 January 2026 the brand announced a hiatus from the 2026 spring/summer collection — framed not as an ending but as preparation for a new beginning. Ochiai spoke of needing time to face clothes sincerely with a fresh mindset, so he could express himself fully through the brand again.

The physical footprint closes while the brand thinks: the FACETASM Aoyama store had its final day on 31 January 2026, and FACETASM Shinsaibashi on 28 February 2026. Nineteen years of work paused with a promise of return — and no date attached to it.

Why it happened

  • An independent designer label runs on its founder's momentum; Ochiai chose to refill it rather than keep showing.
  • The pause is voluntary — but both stores close, so the pause costs the brand its entire retail presence.
  • A hiatus announced without a return date is the shape of risk: some pauses never unpause.

The lesson

Even decorated independents need to stop: FACETASM, Japan's first LVMH Prize finalist, paused after 19 years with its spring/summer 2026 season and closed both stores — a reset with no return date.

Aftermath

FACETASM's stores are closed and the label is on hiatus from spring/summer 2026; Ochiai describes the break as preparation for a new beginning, with no restart date announced.
