Alfred Nobel's dynamite: the unstable explosive he accidentally made safe
Nobel sought to stabilize nitroglycerin. He mixed it with diatomaceous earth. Dynamite built railroads, mines, and the Nobel Prizes.

What happened
Nitroglycerin, first synthesized in 1847 by Italian chemist Ascanio Sobrero, was the most powerful explosive known to science. It was also dangerously unstable — a single jolt could detonate it. Alfred Nobel, a Swedish chemist and engineer, became fascinated with the problem of making nitroglycerin safe enough for commercial use in mining and construction. His father Immanuel was an industrialist who had experimented with explosive mixtures, and Alfred's brother Emil assisted in the family's experiments.
On 3 September 1864, a nitroglycerin explosion at Immanuel Nobel's estate at Heleneborg killed Emil and several others. The disaster forced Alfred to continue his work in more isolated locations. He founded the company Nitroglycerin Aktiebolaget in Vinterviken and later moved to Germany to found Dynamit Nobel. Despite the tragedy, Nobel persisted. He had already invented a reliable blasting cap in 1863 that could detonate nitroglycerin on command, but the problem of safe transport remained unsolved.
Nobel tried mixing nitroglycerin with various substances — cement, coal, sawdust — but none worked. He finally tried diatomaceous earth (kieselguhr), a porous fossilized algae he brought from the Elbe River near his Hamburg factory. The mixture was stable, portable, and could be shaped into cylinders. Nobel originally intended to call it 'Nobel's Safety Powder' but named it dynamite, from the Greek word 'dynamis' meaning power. He obtained patents in England on 7 May 1867 and in Sweden on 19 October 1867.
Dynamite rapidly replaced black powder and pure nitroglycerin in mining, railroad construction, and engineering projects worldwide. It was first manufactured in the United States in 1867 by the Giant Powder Company of San Francisco. The wealth Nobel amassed from dynamite and his other explosives inventions funded the establishment of the Nobel Prizes, first awarded in 1901. A substance too dangerous to handle became the safest explosive of its era — and the foundation of the world's most prestigious awards.

The lesson
The deadliest problem can produce the most valuable solution. Nobel's search for a safe explosive was driven by a family tragedy, and the answer was a fossilized algae that no one else had tried.
