Stava's tailings dams collapsed in 1985 — 268 people died from poor maintenance
Two tailings dams at Prealpi Mineraria's fluorite plant in Stava, Italy collapsed on 19 July 1985, releasing 180,000 m³ of mud at 90 km/h. 268 people died.

What happened
Prealpi Mineraria operated a fluorite processing plant in the Stava valley in Trentino, northern Italy. The plant's tailings — the muddy slurry left after fluorite was extracted — were stored behind two earthen dams built one above the other in the Rio di Stava valley. The upper dam had been raised repeatedly over the years as more waste accumulated, and a drainage pipe running through it was meant to keep water pressure under control.
On the morning of 19 July 1985, the upper dam collapsed without warning. The drainage pipe had sagged under the weight of sediment, reducing its capacity. Water continued to be pumped into the reservoir, but it could not drain fast enough. Pressure built inside the dam bank until water found a path through it, causing soil liquefaction. The bank failed, releasing approximately 180,000 cubic metres of mud, sand and water. Thirty seconds later, the torrent crashed into the lower dam and destroyed it too. The liquefied mass travelled down the valley at 90 km/h.
Within minutes it had crashed through the village of Stava, destroyed 63 buildings and 8 bridges, and killed 268 people — 247 of them in the village itself. The mudflow continued for 4.2 km until it reached the Avisio River. The disaster remains one of Italy's deadliest industrial accidents and one of the worst tailings-dam failures in history.
Why it happened
- The drainage pipe in the upper dam sagged under sediment weight, reducing capacity. Water was pumped in faster than it drained, and pressure built until the dam bank was saturated
- The dams were raised repeatedly without proper engineering review. Each addition increased the drainage load, but nobody redesigned the pipe or checked whether the bank could take the extra pressure
- The margin of safe operation was very small. When drainage fell below capacity, the dam had no backup — water liquefied the soil, and the entire bank failed
The lesson
A sagging drainage pipe is not a maintenance issue — it is a structural failure waiting to happen. When a dam has no backup for the one thing keeping it stable, every day you delay is a gamble.
Aftermath
In June 1992, after a trial that lasted nearly seven years, an Italian court convicted 10 people of culpable disaster and multiple manslaughter related to the collapse. All were sentenced to prison. The Stava valley was never re-inhabited in the same way. The disaster is studied alongside Vajont, Baia Mare and Samarco as a case study in tailings-dam safety and the consequences of ignored maintenance. In 2001, a memorial was built at the site, marking one of Italy's worst industrial disasters.
