What happened

Deng Lun was one of China's most in-demand actors, with endorsements across food, beauty and home appliances. On 15 March 2022 the Shanghai tax authorities released their findings on his tax affairs. Unilever and L'Oréal said they had ended their partnerships with him the same day; home-appliance maker Viomi and dairy brand Junlebao cancelled their deals too.

The speed was the story: a roster built over years emptied in days, and the brand statements were one-line terminations without negotiation. Bulgari, for whom Deng was China ambassador, had yet to announce a decision at the time, leaving the rest of the market watching what it would do.

Why it happened

  • Endorsement contracts price in 'no negative news' risk: the tax announcement was the breach, and brands terminated the same day rather than wait for the details.
  • Four brands across four industries moved at once — food, beauty, appliances, dairy — so a single announcement triggered the whole roster at the same time.
  • The one-line terminations told every other advertiser what the news was worth: zero hesitation, no negotiation.

The lesson

An endorsement roster is only as safe as its least stable asset: when the findings came out, four brands terminated in parallel and the remaining deals lost value with them.

Aftermath

In the months after the announcement Deng Lun's career was in limbo: the brands that terminated did not return, and his commercial work dried up.
