What happened
DealShare was a Bengaluru-based social-commerce startup founded in 2018 that sold groceries and essentials through a community group-buying model, focusing on smaller Indian cities. Backed by Tiger Global, WestBridge Capital and ADIA, it raised more than $390 million and reached a valuation of about $1.7 billion.
By early 2023 the funding environment had tightened and growth slowed. In January 2023 DealShare laid off roughly 100 employees, about 6% of its workforce, as part of a business-restructuring plan. It also scaled back geographic expansion and doubled down on private-label products, committing over Rs 1,000 crore to that business.
On July 31, 2023, co-founder and CEO Vineet Rao stepped down effective immediately. The company said the move was to let a professional CEO lead a pivot to a hybrid online-and-offline model. At the same time, DealShare shifted its operational base to Delhi and told non-tech staff in Bengaluru they had three months to relocate or leave. By November 2023, reports said co-founder and COO Sankar Bora had also exited.
Why it happened
- The group-buying model grew quickly on venture capital but did not generate sustainable unit economics before the funding winter
- The company expanded headcount and geography faster than customer retention and margins could support
- The pivot to private labels and offline retail required different capabilities and a smaller, relocated workforce
- The founder-led CEO role became a bottleneck once the board decided professional leadership was needed for the next phase
The lesson
A workforce built for a capital-fuelled growth story becomes a liability the moment the story changes; the first restructuring move is often the leadership itself.
Aftermath
DealShare pivoted toward a hybrid online-offline model and private-label brands. Co-founder Vineet Rao remained an adviser to the board while a search for a professional CEO continued, and co-founder Sankar Bora also left the company later in 2023.
