Dazzle Me dropped Maris Racal two days after her name hit a breakup scandal

The beauty brand ended its partnership with its 'Gen Z icon' days after screenshots linked her to actor Anthony Jennings' messy breakup — citing brand values.

What happened

On December 3, 2024, screenshots allegedly showing private messages between actress-singer Maris Racal and actor Anthony Jennings went viral in the middle of Jennings' public breakup with his non-showbiz partner. Racal and Jennings did not comment at the time. Two days later, on December 5, Philippine beauty brand Dazzle Me announced it was ending its partnership with Racal, whom it had built up as its 'bold and inspiring Gen Z icon'.

Dazzle Me's statement framed the exit as a values decision: 'After thoughtful consideration, we have made the difficult decision to end our partnership with Maris Racal... we determined that moving in a different direction is necessary to remain consistent with the principles that guide our brand.' The brand also called for 'kindness and empathy within the online space'.

The cost to Dazzle Me was the ambassador investment behind a face it had publicly tied to its identity — a partnership built on 'inclusivity, authenticity' and Gen Z resonance ended in a single announcement. The speed of the move, two days from screenshots to termination, kept the brand from being drawn into the celebrity story itself.

Why it happened

  • A brand whose identity is one face has no margin for that face becoming a story — the screenshots were not about Dazzle Me, but the association made them the brand's problem
  • The two-day gap shows the runway a controversy gives an ambassador-led brand: every hour the partnership continued, the brand lent its name to a story it did not control
  • By phrasing the exit as values rather than scandal, the brand converted the termination into a statement of what it stands for

The lesson

When an ambassador becomes the story for the wrong reason, the only fast move is to cut and reframe — the values language in the exit statement is the brand's defence
