Bangkok's first amusement park closed when its lease ran out

Dan Neramit — 'Magic Land' — opened on 29 January 1976 on 33 rai of Phahonyothin Road in Bangkok, Thailand's first stand-alone amusement park. Behind a Sleeping Beauty-style castle it ran roller coasters, a haunted house and cartoon character meet-and-greets, and for a generation of Bangkok families it was the default place for childhood outings and teenage dates.

The park owned its rides but not its ground. In 2000 its 25-year lease expired, and the landowner was unwilling to renew; park executives had also begun to question whether a leisure park could pay its way on that land much longer. Dan Neramit closed in mid-2000, ending 24 years of operation. Its owner Pannin Kitiparaporn moved the amusement business to Dream World, the larger park the family operated on Bangkok's outskirts.

Unlike many closed parks, Dan Neramit was never flattened: the fairy-tale castle stayed standing, fading into the cityscape beside the BTS line while the grounds were leased out for go-kart racing. In 2023 the site found a new life as a night market — Jodd Fair Dan Neramit — trading on the very nostalgia that made its closure a recurring Thai internet event.
