What happened
Companion Seika (コンパニオン製靴) was a leather shoe maker based in Saitama City's Iwatsuki district and registered in Taito, Tokyo. It made shoes using Italian manufacturing methods and sold under its own brand as well as making footwear for other labels.
At its peak the company posted about ¥2.1 billion in sales. Its market shrank as lower-cost imported shoes took a growing share of Japanese retail, a squeeze that has closed many small domestic makers who could not match overseas production costs.
On 8 October 2025 the Tokyo District Court issued a bankruptcy commencement order for the company, with total liabilities of about ¥110 million. Lawyer Satoko Kitamura was appointed bankruptcy trustee.
Why it happened
- A domestic maker's cost base could not compete with imported shoes, so sales fell from a ¥2.1 billion peak as cheap imports took over the market.
- A small leather-shoe maker had few levers left when the market it served shrank, and no brand reach strong enough to command a premium.
- Slowing sales and tightening cash left the company unable to keep going, ending in a bankruptcy order with about ¥110 million in liabilities.
The lesson
A domestic maker whose only edge was craftsmanship has no edge once imports match the shelf price. ¥2.1B in peak sales could not survive a market that bought cheaper shoes made overseas.
Aftermath
The Tokyo District Court ordered Companion Seika into bankruptcy on 8 October 2025, with liabilities of about ¥110 million. The case is one of many small Japanese shoe and footwear makers that closed as imported shoes undercut domestic manufacturing.
