What happened

VannDa is one of Cambodia's most influential artists, especially among young people. He was a Coca-Cola brand ambassador, featured on Coca-Cola Cambodia's official page in a photo posted in July 2025.

In mid-August 2025, Coca-Cola Cambodia removed his images from its official channels. Bangkok Post reported that the company had cancelled his brand-ambassador contract over his social-media comments about the Thai–Cambodian border conflict, which were thought to have violated contractual terms.

Coca-Cola never confirmed the termination, and his label Baramey Production did not respond. The removal still sparked outrage in Cambodia, where netizens flooded Coca-Cola Cambodia's page with angry comments and calls for a boycott.

Cambodian Senate President Hun Sen urged calm, saying Coca-Cola was a US brand providing jobs for Cambodians and that a boycott forcing the company out would ultimately hurt Cambodia.

Why it happened

  • Neutrality is the policy, perception is the outcome: removing one ambassador's picture read to Cambodians as the company taking Thailand's side.
  • The brand's silence did the damage: with no confirmation either way, the termination story ran on anger rather than fact.
  • A local ambassador contract is small insurance against a nationalist boycott — and it bought the company no goodwill in a border dispute.

The lesson

Coca-Cola Cambodia dropped VannDa amid the Thai–Cambodian border dispute. Saying nothing while cutting an ambassador reads as choosing a side — the ambiguity itself sparked the boycott.

Business adviser Ros Van Ritha said the removal reflected Coca-Cola's policy of political neutrality.
