Clergerie's final liquidation — the buyer kept the brand but killed the craft
The luxury shoe house Clergerie was bought by Titan Footwear in 2023, hollowed out, and placed in definitive liquidation in April 2025 — ~50 jobs lost

What happened
Clergerie is a French luxury shoe house founded in 1981 by Robert Clergerie in Romans-sur-Isère, one of the last French leather-shoe makers alongside Paraboot, J.M. Weston and Heschung. In its golden age it dressed everyone from Lauren Bacall to Madonna. In 2023 it entered receivership and was taken over by California-based Titan Footwear, a subsidiary of Titan Industries.
The 2023 takeover did not preserve the heritage production. In June 2023, 75 people were laid off and the production workshop in Romans-sur-Isère was closed, leaving only assembly and quality-control tasks in the town. The brand was split across several entities — creation (Tiger Mode), boutiques (JHJ) and production (SSB). By December 2024 JHJ and SSB were back in receivership, and in March 2025 they were placed in liquidation.
On 8 April 2025 the tribunal de commerce of Romans-sur-Isère refused the only takeover offer, from minority shareholder Joseph Lévy, who proposed keeping the boutiques and the brand while relocating production. The tribunal placed the house in definitive liquidation, and around 50 employees lost their jobs, mostly in Romans-sur-Isère. A later Spanish takeover offer (Petrel 92 SL) was itself annulled by the Grenoble Court of Appeal in February 2026.
Why it happened
- Titan Footwear's 2023 restructuring saved the brand name but stripped the workshop and most of the workforce, erasing the craft that was the brand's reason to exist
- Offshoring production and cutting jobs bought only a short reprieve — the house was back in receivership within a year
- The tribunal rejected the only 2025 takeover bid because it would have relocated production rather than restore it
- No buyer would preserve the heritage business, so definitive liquidation was the end for one of France's last luxury shoe makers
The lesson
Rescuing a heritage brand by keeping the name and cutting the craft sells the thing that made it sellable — a buyer who strips the workshop inherits the decline
Aftermath
The tribunal de commerce of Romans-sur-Isère placed Clergerie in definitive liquidation on 8 April 2025. Around 50 employees were laid off, mostly at the last factory site in Romans-sur-Isère. Employee delegate Valérie Treffé-Chavant, a 34-year veteran, called it 'a waste, and a feeling of disrespect toward the employees and Mr. Clergerie'. The Grenoble Court of Appeal later annulled a Spanish takeover by Petrel 92 SL on 12 February 2026, definitively confirming the liquidation.
