Cerruti dressed Hollywood for 130 years — then vanished from the West
Nino Cerruti's 1881 brand dressed Michael Caine and Jack Nicholson. After he sold in 2000, it bankrupted, shrunk, and fled to China.

What happened
Cerruti was founded in 1881 as a wool mill in Biella, Italy. Nino Cerruti took over at 20 and turned it into one of Italy's great fashion houses — dressing Michael Caine, Jack Nicholson, and Harrison Ford. Cerruti 1881 became synonymous with Italian elegance and was a fixture of menswear worldwide, with stores in New York, London, Paris, Tokyo, and Milan.
In October 2000, Nino Cerruti sold the brand to Italian investment group Fin.part. By 2004, Fin.part was in a deep financial crisis, and in 2005 it declared bankruptcy. A planned takeover by Italian manufacturer Manifattura Paolini failed. In 2006, US private equity firm MatlinPatterson acquired Cerruti out of the wreckage.
By the 2010s, Cerruti was owned by Hong Kong's Trinity Ltd., itself later acquired by Shandong Ruyi. As of May 2021, Cerruti operated only 84 stores in 34 cities, all in China, Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan. A brand that once competed globally had completely withdrawn from every Western market.
Why it happened
- Nino Cerruti was the brand — his personal taste and design direction drove Cerruti 1881 for 50 years, and no institutional design identity survived his departure in 2000.
- Fin.part was a financial buyer with no fashion expertise — the group went bankrupt within five years of the acquisition, demonstrating it had neither the capital nor the strategy for a luxury house.
- Each successive owner (MatlinPatterson, Trinity) treated Cerruti as an asset to be stripped rather than a fashion house to be rebuilt, and the brand steadily retreated into China.
The lesson
A brand that depends on the founder's taste is a lease on one person's talent. Cerruti lasted 20 years after Nino left, but only by shrinking from global to China-only.
Aftermath
Cerruti 1881 continues to operate in China, Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan with 84 stores. The brand that once clothed Hollywood stars no longer has a presence in any Western market. Shandong Ruyi, which owned Trinity Ltd. through its acquisition spree, has since faced its own financial difficulties. The Cerruti name survives, but the Italian fashion house that Nino built disappeared within a decade of his departure.
