Canada Goose called its down 'the warmest' on Tmall — most of it was duck, not goose
Canada Goose's China store called its filling 'the warmest' Canadian down. Most jackets it sold used duck down instead, and regulators fined it 450,000 yuan.

What happened
Canada Goose's official Tmall flagship store described its jackets as 'hailed as the best cross-country jacket' and said its down filling was Hutterite down — 'excellent and the warmest Canadian down' — copy built to justify prices well above domestic rivals on the strength of the down itself.
Shanghai's Huangpu district market regulator investigated and found the claim did not match what the store actually sold: of 190 down garment styles on offer, about 16.8% used goose down and roughly 83.2% used duck down, which has lower fill power. Calling the down 'excellent and the warmest' as a blanket claim, when most of the range was the lower-fill material, did not match the products behind it.
Regulators ruled the claims false advertising under China's Advertisement Law, fined the operating company 450,000 yuan, and ordered it to stop running the ads and to eliminate the false impression within the same scope it had been advertised.
Why it happened
- The claim generalised from the premium end of the range to the whole line, so a superlative defensible for one style became false once read as covering all 190.
- 'The warmest' is exactly the absolute, unqualified claim advertising law targets, since it invites a regulator to test it against the full catalogue, not the flagship item.
- Down type is a checkable physical fact rather than opinion, so the gap between the copy and what was actually sold was easy for a regulator to establish.
The lesson
Canada Goose called its down 'the warmest' on Tmall; most of what it sold was lower-fill duck down. Shanghai fined it 450,000 yuan. A superlative has to be true of the range, not the flagship item.
Aftermath
Shanghai's Huangpu district regulator fined the store operator 450,000 yuan for false advertising and ordered the ads pulled and the false impression corrected within the scope it had reached.
