A channel built on one host's provocations lost its license — C8 is off French TV
C8's bet on Cyril Hanouna's TPMP cost it a record 7.6M euros in fines and finally its TNT frequency; the channel went dark on March 1, 2025.

What happened
C8 spent nearly two decades as the French channel nobody could ignore: from 2005 it broadcast Cyril Hanouna's TPMP, the nightly talk show whose ratings carried the channel — and whose provocations kept the regulator busy. By the end, Arcom had fined C8 a record 7,610,001 euros over eight years, including 3.5 million euros for insults Hanouna directed at MP Louis Boyard in February 2023.
In July 2024 Arcom refused to renew C8's TNT frequency, citing the tone of Hanouna's shows and the channel's heavy reliance on him. C8 appealed to the Conseil d'État, which rejected the final appeal on February 19, 2025. On March 1, 2025, at midnight, C8 ceased broadcasting.
The cost was steep for the owner: Canal+ Group said nearly 400 C8 employees and contractors were about to lose their jobs, and the channel had accumulated 736 million euros in losses since 2005. On the final TPMP broadcast, Hanouna announced he was joining the M6 group — the person survived, the channel did not.
Why it happened
- The channel was the host: C8's schedule leaned so heavily on TPMP and Hanouna that the regulator read the show's tone as the channel's editorial line — and priced it accordingly.
- Fines were the meter, not the deterrent: 7.6 million euros in sanctions over eight years did not change the programming, and each new episode reset the risk.
- The appeal clock ran out: the delayed-broadcast promise arrived only during the July 9 hearing, too late and too vague for Arcom, and the Conseil d'État backed the regulator.
- A single-person brand is a single point of failure: when the license was lost, the host announced his move to M6 while the channel's 400 employees and the 736-million-euro loss stayed behind.
The lesson
C8 bet its license on one host: record fines did not change the programming, so the regulator changed the channel — a broadcast license is a risk that accumulates.
Aftermath
Arcom refused to renew C8's TNT frequency on July 24, 2024. The Conseil d'État rejected C8's final appeal on February 19, 2025, and the channel ceased broadcasting at midnight on March 1, 2025. Arcom had fined C8 7,610,001 euros over eight years, including 3.5 million euros for insults to MP Louis Boyard and 3 million for a homophobic prank. Canal+ Group said nearly 400 employees and contractors faced job losses; C8 had lost 736 million euros since 2005. On the last TPMP, February 27, 2025, Hanouna announced he would join M6, with a daily show on W9 from September 1.
