BrucePac: ready-to-eat meat shipped with listeria inside

BrucePac is a large ready-to-eat meat and poultry producer whose products end up inside other companies' meals, salads and sandwiches sold under many brand names. A listeria contamination traced to its Durant, Oklahoma plant pushed recalls across the whole shelf.

The recall began October 9, 2024 at nearly 10 million pounds and was expanded to about 11.8 million pounds covering products made between May and October 2024. Because the meat was an ingredient sold to retailers, restaurants and institutions, the recall rippled into items from Aldi, Walmart, Trader Joe's and Amazon and into more than one hundred school cafeterias.

The outbreak toppled trust in a supplier whose entire business was being the invisible ingredient behind the label. A single plant's hygiene failure turned a private supplier into a national recall headline.
