Bossini spent 28 years building 51 stores in Taiwan — then left in 2020

Bossini entered Taiwan in 1992, grew to 51 stores, then announced its exit in 2020 and closed every one of them by July.

What happened

Bossini (堡獅龍) was a Hong Kong-based casual fashion brand founded by Law Ting-pong in 1987. It expanded rapidly in the 1990s and early 2000s, opening its first store in Taiwan in 1992 and listing on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange in 1993. By 2020, the brand had 938 stores globally across 32 countries, including 51 directly managed stores in Taiwan.

The 2010s were difficult for Bossini. The brand faced intense competition from fast-fashion retailers like Uniqlo, Zara, and H&M, as well as from local Asian brands. Same-store sales declined, and the company's financial performance deteriorated. In 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic delivered the final blow to the already struggling Taiwan operations.

In 2020, Bossini announced it would exit the Taiwan market entirely, closing all 51 stores by the end of July. The same year, the company was acquired by Viva China (非凡中國), a company controlled by the family of Chinese sportswear billionaire Li Ning, for HK$46.62 million — a fraction of what the brand had been worth at its peak. The Taiwan exit was part of a broader restructuring that saw the brand reinvent itself as 'bossini.X' in 2021.

Why it happened

  • Bossini's mid-market casual wear was squeezed between fast-fashion giants like Uniqlo and Zara above and ultra-cheap local brands below
  • The Taiwan business had been losing money for years, and COVID-19 in 2020 made the losses untenable — closing all 51 stores was a clean exit from a market that was no longer profitable
  • The company was already struggling globally and was sold for just HK$46.62M, indicating how far the brand had fallen
  • Bossini had no unique product or brand position that Taiwanese customers could not get from other brands at the same or lower price

The lesson

A mid-market fashion brand with no distinctive position will be squeezed out when fast-fashion retailers enter the same price band with better supply chains and trend cycles.

Aftermath

Bossini completed its Taiwan exit by July 2020, closing all 51 stores. The same year, it was acquired by Viva China (Li Ning's family) for HK$46.62 million. In 2021, the brand relaunched as 'bossini.X', a lifestyle and sportswear brand. The company's global footprint shrank but the brand continued operating in Hong Kong, China, and other markets through franchises.
