Joachim Boldt published 90+ anesthesia papers on patients he never treated
German anesthesiologist Boldt published 90+ papers on patients he never treated. The fraud was discovered in 2010. Most papers were retracted.
Klinikum Ludwigshafen · 2010-11
What happened
Joachim Boldt, a German anesthesiologist at Klinikum Ludwigshafen, published over 90 research papers between 1999 and 2010, primarily on the use of hydroxyethyl starch (HES) solutions in surgery. His papers were widely cited and influenced clinical practice across Europe.
In 2010, an investigation revealed that Boldt had not obtained ethics committee approval for most of his studies, and that many of the patients described in his papers had never existed. The data were fabricated. Over 90 of his papers were retracted — one of the largest mass retractions in medical history.
The case was particularly damaging because Boldt's research had promoted the use of HES solutions, which were later found to cause kidney damage and increase mortality. Hospitals that had adopted HES protocols based on Boldt's work had to revise their practices. The case illustrated how fabricated research can directly harm patients when it influences clinical practice, and how the peer review system can fail to detect fabrication when the data appear plausible.
Why it happened
- Boldt published 90+ papers based on patients he never treated; the data were fabricated.
- He did not obtain ethics committee approval for most studies.
- His research promoted HES solutions later found to cause kidney damage.
- Over 90 papers were retracted; clinical practices had to be revised.
The lesson
Peer review checks whether the numbers are plausible, not whether the patients were real. Fabricated trials enter clinical guidelines and stay there until someone counts the beds.
Aftermath
Boldt was dismissed from Klinikum Ludwigshafen. Over 90 papers were retracted. The case prompted German medical journals to strengthen ethics approval verification. It is cited alongside Fujii as an example of how fabricated medical research can directly harm patients.
