Kobunsha revived bis twice — then let it go irregular for good

Publisher Kobunsha relaunched fashion magazine bis in 2017 after an 11-year hiatus; in 2025 it cut the title loose from any fixed schedule at all.

What it means today

Watch for publishers who quietly cut a title's fixed schedule instead of announcing a closure — the schedule is usually the actual product being discontinued.

What happened

bis launched in 2001 as a Kobunsha fashion title aimed at young women who wanted to hold onto a "girly" aesthetic into adulthood. It stopped publishing in 2006, sat dormant for eleven years, and was revived in October 2017 as a bimonthly under the same positioning — one of a wave of 2010s magazine revivals betting that nostalgia could rebuild a print readership that had largely moved online.

The revival throttled down gradually rather than closing outright. In May 2024, bis dropped from six issues a year to four, becoming a quarterly. On September 1, 2025, the magazine's editorial team announced on Instagram, and Kobunsha confirmed by press release on October 31, that the Winter 2026 issue — on sale December 1, 2025 — would be its last on a fixed schedule. bis would continue, but only as unscheduled, irregular issues going forward; even its official website and social accounts were only committed to running through the end of January 2026.

Kobunsha gave no single cause, framing the move as adapting to how readers and business partners now want fashion content. It followed weeks after Japan's book-and-magazine industry reported estimated 2025 print sales falling below ¥1 trillion for the first time, with fashion titles specifically named as a category losing regular publication.

Why it happened

  • A magazine already revived once, paused once, and cut to half its frequency within the prior year showed that the schedule itself, not any single issue, was what readers had stopped waiting for.
  • Kobunsha kept the bis name and accounts running rather than announcing a closure, avoiding an end-of-magazine headline while quietly ending what made it a magazine: a date readers could count on.
  • The same month, rival publisher Shueisha paused print on its 48-year-old title MORE — evidence the pressure was industry-wide, not a problem specific to bis's content or audience.

The lesson

A magazine's promise to its readers is the schedule, not just the pages — cut the schedule and you've closed the magazine, whatever you keep calling the thing that still gets printed.

Aftermath

The December 2025 Winter issue shipped as planned and was the last one dated to a specific season. Kobunsha committed to keeping bis's official site and social accounts running only through January 2026, without naming a date for any issue after that.
